Upgrading the RSCD agent on Windows

To upgrade the RSCD agent on Microsoft Windows, run the installation program for the version of the agent to which you want to upgrade.

Important information about upgrading agents on Windows

The upgrade uses the installation settings from the previous installation.

Note

  • If you previously installed a 32-bit Windows agent on a 64-bit platform, you cannot simply upgrade to a 64-bit Windows agent. You must first uninstall the old 32-bit version of the agent before you can successfully install the new 64-bit version.
  • To avoid problems caused by user replication in replicated domain controller environments, you should follow a recommended procedure for installing or upgrading RSCD agents, as described in Installing-RSCD-agents-in-a-replicated-domain-controller-environment.
  • If your TrueSight Server Automation system includes domain controllers, upgrade RSCD agents on domain controllers at the same time that you upgrade the file server.
  • Upgrading to a new release can potentially create mismatches between the version of a custom configuration object, an agent, and any model objects that reference custom configuration objects. See Upgrading-custom-configuration-objects.
  • If the Application Server and the RSCD agent are on the same system, they must be at the same version. If you upgrade one component, you must upgrade the other to the same version. Perform the upgrade steps in the following order:
    1. Shut down the Application Server.
    2. Upgrade the RSCD agent.
    3. Verify the agent is running and has been upgraded. To do so, run the following command: agentinfo <serverName>
    4. Upgrade the Application Server.
  • To ensure the removal of old entries in the Add or Remove Programs list, run the RSCD agent installer as administrator.

  • Ensure that Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Update 3 or Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 redistributable is installed on the server. For more information, see Installing an RSCD agent (Windows).

    Note

    As a prerequisite to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Update 3 on Windows 2012 R2, you must have the following patches installed on your server:

    • KB2919442 (Required for 2919355)
    • KB2919355. This patch requires several other patches: clearcompressionflag.exe, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2959977, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018. This are all available on the download page for KB2919355.

  • When you upgrade the RSCD Agent from version 20.02 to 20.02.01 using the command line, you can enable or disable the Smart Agent service by providing the SMARTAGENT_SERVICE parameter. For more information, see Silently-upgrading-Windows-agents.

Before you begin

The patch analysis function of TrueSight Server Automation requires the Microsoft XML (MSXML) parser version 6.0 SP2 or later to be installed on the server on which the RSCD agent is installed. You can install the RSCD agent on a computer on which MSXML is not installed, but patch analysis does not function correctly until MSXML 6.0 SP2 or later is installed.

To upgrade the RSCD agent on Windows


  1. Log in to the system as an administrator where you want to upgrade the RSCD agent.
  2. Extract the zipped file (the installer) that you downloaded from EPD.
  3. Navigate to the directory containing the installation files.
  4. Run the installation program for the RSCD agent. (Installation program names follow the convention: RSCD<version>-<platform>.)
  5. If the installation program displays an information message saying that a reboot is required to complete the setup, click OK.
  6. On the Welcome page, click Next.
  7. Configure the Smart Agent parameters, and click Next:
    • Specify whether you want to enable the Smart Agent service. The service is enabled by default, which indicates that the Smart Agent is started automatically after installation.
    • The name of the host where the Smart Hub is installed.
    • The listener port of the Smart Hub. The default port is 443.
    • The predefined identifier that is used for enrolling the server. Enter one of the following identifiers to be used for the enrollment:
      • <HOSTNAME>: Indicates the server host name. This is the default identifier.
      • <SMARTHUB_PEER_IP>: Indicates the IP address of the server.
      • <SMARTHUB_PEER_FQDN>: Indicates the fully qualified domain name of the Smart Hub IP address.
      • <UUID> Indicates the UUID value that is generated for the server.
      • A combination of <HOSTNAME>.domain or free text, such as smartagent.domain.
    • The interval within which the system must be enrolled. The default interval is 15 minutes. Specify the interval in the range 1 - 360 minutes.
    • The interval at which the agent must send heartbeats to the Smart Hub for status updates. The default interval is 5 minutes. Specify the interval in the range 1 - 360 minutes.
    • The access key that is configured for the Smart Hub. This key is used for authenticating with the Smart Hub. To obtain the access key, see Configuring-the-Smart-Hub-and-Smart-Hub-Gateway.
  8. Click Install to start the installation process.
  9. Click Finish to exist the wizard.
    The RSCD agent is installed and started.
